I had the opportunity to work with Jamal Mayers during my time in youth hockey, and his impact on players goes far beyond what happens during practices and games. From day one, he brought a level of professionalism, energy, and positivity that immediately earned the respect of both players and parents. His experience playing at the highest levels of hockey gives him credibility, but what stood out most was his ability to connect with young athletes and make the game enjoyable while still holding everyone accountable. One of Jamal's greatest strengths as a coach is his focus on player development. He takes the time to teach the details of the game and explains not only what players should do, but why they should do it. Whether it was positioning, puck management, or decision-making under pressure, he consistently found ways to simplify complex concepts so players could understand and apply them. Practices were well organized, competitive, and designed to help players improve every time they stepped on the ice. What impressed me most was how much he genuinely cared about the growth of each individual player. Jamal treated every athlete with respect and encouraged them to believe in themselves, regardless of their skill level. He recognized that confidence plays a huge role in development and worked hard to create an environment where players felt supported while still being challenged to reach their potential. Beyond hockey skills, Jamal emphasized character, teamwork, and accountability. He taught players the importance of being good teammates, working hard, and handling adversity the right way. Those lessons carry over into everyday life and are something many players will remember long after their playing days are over. He set a strong example through his own actions and consistently reinforced the values that help young athletes succeed both on and off the ice. Overall, my experience with Jamal Mayers was extremely positive. He combines high-level hockey knowledge with excellent communication skills and a genuine passion for helping young players develop. Any player looking to improve their game while learning valuable life lessons would benefit from having the opportunity to play for a coach like Jamal. His dedication to player development and his commitment to creating a positive team culture make him someone I would highly recommend.

Stay as far away as you can from this one.

Guy is a joke. His kid is mediocre at best and he throws him out in every situation with the most minutes on the team. No wonder this teams best player ran as fast as he could, sad because the dads are buddies. Clearly this guy is not coaching to help anyone.

His practices are decent. But that’s about it. It’s very obvious he’s only coaching to advance his own son. Communication to the team is awkward and uncomfortable at its best and downright nasty at times. Communication with parents is also extremely awkward and weird. Frequent outburst and big baby/sore-loser behavior often displayed. Added pressure to pay him for lessons as well.
